Borrowing

Borrowed finery

Borrowed future

How long do I have to wait for you,

wait for the future?

I have borrowed

against the day

When my disguise

will fall away

I have dressed in riches

Dressed in rags

Prepared the scrimpings

of my clothings

Pranced before mirrors

Simpered before cameras

I have tried and I have failed,

to look my best for you.

It’s not up to me

I wish it were!

The coarse and unperfected parts of me -

We wish it were

But it’s His

and I am His

And my body will wait

Til the preappointed date.

For what does my heart portend?

What can my weight extend?

His days are His days

and no efforts will change.

I’m here in captivity,

and by His will alone

I’ll be undone.

By His will, I will be free.
