I Have Seen Enough Cafés

There are enough cafés.

In my mind, I’ve seen

what Paris looks like

in the morning

I’ve drank an espresso

And read the paper

I have lived

in every age

I have seen the fall

of tired dynasty

Seen it consumed whole

By another

There is never

a place

for the weary…

or the tired…

There are enough cafes -

In Germany, where the

guilty walk the streets like Muslims

And Muslims flee the East

I have seen

the Sun

descend on you

Seen it rise too

In London Town,

In Santa Fe,

In Moscow, where I saw

The pilgrims all turn gray

I’ve seen the pilgrims

file in buses

Seen them queue

along the Falls

From my seat

On Broadway

Seen them offer incense

to false gods

Coffee, like nectar, pours

Purchase a ceremonial mug

Music, like worship, soars

Never sing along

My tribute paid

To free and fast

My second cup

To go

I rise from cafés

in the skies

Depart, my sacred

home
